The grinding process of the wheel is from coarse grinding to fine grinding and polishing
Nov 05, 2024
In industrial production, grinding is an important reason to ensure the surface accuracy and roughness of the workpiece. According to the different needs and processing stages of the product, grinding can be divided into a series of processes from rough grinding to polishing. Today we will describe these processes and their characteristics, as well as the corresponding grinding wheel guidance.
Grinding process division and characteristics
1. Coarse grinding stage
Purpose: The main purpose of rough grinding is to quickly remove a large amount of residual on the surface of the workpiece, so that the workpiece is close to the final shape and size.
Features: At this stage, the grinding efficiency is high, but the processing surface is rough. A lot of heat and chips are generated during grinding, so the grinding wheel is required to have better wear resistance and chip removal ability.
Grinding wheel selection: Select a grinding wheel with coarse grain size and appropriate hardness (usually slightly soft) to improve grinding efficiency and adapt to wear during grinding. Softer grinding wheels can better adapt to the loss of abrasive particles during grinding, exposing new sharp abrasive particles, thus improving grinding efficiency.
2. Semi-fine grinding stage
Objective: To further remove the residual of the workpiece surface and improve the surface roughness to prepare for subsequent fine grinding or polishing.
Features: The grinding efficiency at this stage is slightly lower, but the quality of the machined surface has been improved. The grinding wheel is required to have better self-sharpness and certain wear resistance.
Grinding wheel selection: Select a grinding wheel with medium particle size and medium hardness to balance grinding efficiency and surface quality. Medium hardness grinding wheels can provide better surface quality while maintaining a certain grinding efficiency.
3. Grinding stage

Objective: To obtain high precision machining surface and low roughness value.
Features: This stage has the lowest grinding efficiency, but the highest surface quality. The grinding wheel is required to have fine abrasive, good self-sharpening and wear resistance.
Grinding wheel selection: Select a grinding wheel with fine granularity and appropriate hardness (usually slightly harder) for better surface quality and accuracy. Although the grinding stage requires the grinding wheel to have a fine abrasive and good self-sharpness, a slightly stiffer grinding wheel can better maintain the shape of the grinding wheel and improve grinding accuracy.
4. Polishing stage
Objective: To further improve the gloss and roughness of the workpiece surface to achieve mirror effect.
Features: Polishing is a fine processing process that requires the use of special polishing tools and materials.
Polishing material selection: Commonly used polishing materials include polishing cloth, polishing paste, polishing fluid, etc. The selection of polishing cloth should be selected according to the polishing requirements of different particle size and material polishing cloth; The polishing paste and polishing liquid are selected according to the material and polishing effect of the workpiece.
